The impact a manager can have on a ball club is, to my mind, greatly exaggerated. I think there are extreme exceptions in that some managers to seem to get a lot of our their players time and time again (IE: Jack McKeon), and some blow out young arms and the like (IE: Dusty Baker).
Most, however, are fairly interchangable, I think. It's still the players, first and foremost. So I think Torre's hiring is somewhat good for the Dodgers' fans because it indicates a serious desire to win on the part of ownership. But at the same time the money that went to Torre could have gone to the roster, where it's likely to do more good.
So, a mixed bag for Dodger fans, I'd say. Unless you're a believer in the idea that managers have huge impacts on their teams, in which case you've got to consider it pretty good news.

I think that baseball is a sport that coaching techniques are more subtle than other sports. Pressing in baseball only brings failure.
I think a great manager is a combo of strategy, technique and psychology.

hi there, every person has a different point of view but i feel that if Joe Torre joins the Los angeles Dodgers.then its really a good thing.
