He's backed off on this threat since, I believe, which I think is pretty telling. I'm not sure what he took, but I can't imagine that he took nothing at all. Guys like Bonds and Clemens have always been great players, but they've performed at high levels to ridiculously late points in their careers. They are, quite simply, the best hitter and the best pitcher of their respective age, in Major League Baseball history. The odds don't seem very good that they both did it completely on their own...there's a reason athletes slow late in their career. Everyone is subject to it to some degree or another. They just DON'T get better this late.

Whatever Clemens took, I don't think it necessarily made him a better pitcher (though I doubt it could hurt much). But what I think it clearly did so was allow him not to get any worse. It helped him stay healthy, and helped him perform at a high level far, far past the point in his career at which he'd have been able to otherwise. And avoiding a decline is cheating in the same way sparking an improvement is.

All in all, it's just sad news for baseball fans, who will have to take many of this era's accomplishments with a grain of salt. Like the "dead ball era," we'll have to make reference to something coming from the "steroids era" when we want to make historical comprisons.

I don't think anyone's saying speed is okay. We don't talk about it as much, though, because it happened some time ago, and media coverage simply wasn't as intensive and thorough then as it is now.

I do think steroids are probably worse, though. They seem to be more harmful, and I think they provide a more fundamental edge than speed or "greenies" can. But that's just my opinion.

I think both steroids and speed give you a boost at the end of the year when fatigue sets in.

Imyself could not imagine trying to adjust to a curve ball when sitting on a fastball while AMP'd up!

I think may players in their long careers do this, but they should be given one chance, and their future should be made secure so they don't have to rely on these practices for sustainance.

Agreed. Besides, aren't they fooling themselves? I can't at all assume that pumping oneself full of all kinds of artificial chemicals can be good for a person in the long run. Why not just stay healthy the all natural way..with current benefits and long run benefits?

Greed ruins sports. That's for sure. Whether it is fixing games, leaving teams for more money, or improving one's performance by illegal enhancing drugs.
