Imreally not in the football discussin mood. Im kinda flyin' in a holding pattern, waitin' to see what the Tuna's next move is gonna be. I was pretty much in the same space this time last year when Air Wayne was hopping around w/o the benefit of any person with real hands on football knowledge.

I feel a little more confident that we are in better hands than we were when Wayne had the final say. Needless to say I am not much of a Huizenga fan. It seems like the tea leaves are saying Sparano will be the next Fin coach. Of course that could all be a misdirection. Truth be told I had never heard of Sparano before.

Yea, I am with you. Guarded optimism!

Hey. baseball is comin.. off to the `MLB forum here to discuss Torre! Heh!

I KNOW you dont care for him!

Well shoot! When I made that post we hadn't hired Sparano. Now we have. Good! It was basically a forgone conclusion anyways. It seems that he was BPs guy and sur enuff he was.

Here we go round the mulberry bush the mul.... What? Now we need an OC right? Or did we hire one of them while I wasn't paying attention......

Yeah I basically lost my patience with Torre and the way he managed with his station to station philosophy. It made for either hot or cold hitting and nothing in between. Except when facing great pitchers - we ALWAYS lost close games.

Near the end, saying I didn't care for him was a vast understatement. I truly came to abhor him. Just like Wanny. Maybe he is good for LA. IMO he was more of a NL guy anyway. My guess is the Dodgers will do nothing with Joe as their manager. I' was never a Dodger fan to begin with. Now even less so.

NFL Draft deep in defensive backfield

By BARRY JACKSON

Never too early for Dolphins draft chatter, with Senior Bowl practices starting Monday:

Draftniks say there is strong depth among cornerbacks and offensive tackles, and NFL Network guru Mike Mayock said the Dolphins should be able to address those needs, if they choose, with either of their second-round picks, or the first pick of the third round.

Mayock said by phone the group of offensive tackles ''at the top end, is the best in years,'' with Michigan's Jake Long considered a top-five pick and Boise State's Ryan Clady a mid-first-rounder.

ESPN.com's Todd McShay has left tackles Sam Baker (Southern Cal) and Jeff Otah (Pitt) going 20th and 23rd, respectively, in his mock draft, but Mayock said either might be available when the Dolphins pick first in Round 2.

Second-round options also include Boston College's Gosder Cherilus (better at right tackle than left), Vanderbilt's Chris Williams (allowed two sacks the past two seasons at LT) and Kansas LT Anthony Collins. Left tackles Oniel Cousins (UTEP) and Carl Nicks (Nebraska) also are well-regarded.

• At cornerback, there are two projected first-rounders: South Florida's Mike Jenkins (ninth in McShay's mock draft) and Kansas' Aqib Talib (15th).

''There's a lot of solid second- or third-round cornerbacks,'' Mayock said, including Troy's Leodis McKelvin (could sneak into Round 1), Auburn's Patrick Lee, Iowa's Charles Godfrey (excellent speed), Indiana's Tracy Porter, South Florida's Trae Williams, Virginia Tech's Brandon Flowers, Tennessee State's Dominique RodgersCromartie (''great speed and jumping ability, and he's 6-2,'' Mayock said), and Colorado's Terrence Wheatley. Others like Oklahoma's Reggie Smith, Arizona's Antoine Cason, BC's DeJuan Tribble (undersized for Miami at 5-9) and Wisconsin's Jack Ikegwuono in that second/third-round range.

• But safety is weak. Frank Croyle, of draftinsiders.com, said UM's Kenny Phillips might be the only safety taken in the first two rounds.

• ESPN.com's McShay made a point you will hear a lot about the Dolphins' No. 1 overall pick: If they use a 3-4 defense, as many expect, it would not play to LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey's strengths: ''It wouldn't be cost effective to spend No. 1 money on an interior lineman in that scheme.'' And Mayock said USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis is just as good as Dorsey.

CHATTER

A friend said Ricky Williams told associates the new Dolphins regime indicated he is in the team's plans, as long as he doesn't get in trouble and stays in town for offseason work and rehabilitation from his pectoral injury.

From Greg Cotes Q & A

www.realcities.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/columnists/greg_cote/qa_forum.html

Q Any word on Ronnie Brown's rehab progress? Is the knee rehabbing properly, any complications? There hasn't been any news on this so I'm curious to know how our only productive player is coming along.
Luis, Coral Gables, FL 1/18/08

A His rehab supposedly is going fine but it's a serious injury he's coming back from. Like Dwyane Wade, he may not be 100 percent even when he's playing again. It is why Darren McFadden is not a possibility to be discounted.

Q what do you think that the team should do with the #1 pick?
Anonymous, Miami,Fl 1/18/08

A I would spend it on Matt Ryan (on a quarterback) if I were convinced he is a sure-fire franchise guy. I might spend it on Darren Mcfadden if I thought he was another Adrian peterson and that Ronnie Brown's health was an issue. I'd consider Glenn Dorsey only if i saw a fit for my 3-4 defense. Bottom line: With too many ifs above, I'd trade down.

If mcfadden is the top pick I say we trade out.

I wouldn't mind having a franchise back(if indeed he is that good - like Mr Purple) on the Dolphins. True we need an O line. I was sorry to see we let Hudson Houck go. He may have been the best assistant coach we had.

I think that columnist brings up an excellent point about Ronnie Browns injury and whether oe not he is gonna be ready in time PLUS he has been injured a lot.

All primary backs are subject to injury and that is why I wouldn't balk if we ended up drafting McFadden.

A lot of coaches scouts & personnel guys dont like taking O lineman high in the draft. At least thats what I've heard. We'll see. We really need a top shelf plazma OLT. But we also need a lot of other things too so........ Whatever they do I will be OK with. I know NOTHING!

I think or I should say I THOUGHT Chatman filled in admirably after RB got hurt but the sad fact is and I was discussing this same thing with my cousin who doesn't like Chatman at all. He says Chatman has intelligence issues. He is also a horrible pass protection blocker and missed a lot of blitz pick ups with horrible results to both of our QBs. That I could see for myself. You cant question his heart or his motor tho......We'll see, maybe the new coach can teach him. That is if he even makes the team.......

New GM New Pres New coach. Cams players may not be around too long.... Just like Cam didn't keep too many of Sabans and Saban didn't keep too many of DW's

Henning is favorite to lead Dolphins' offense

Former coach worked under Parcells with Jets

By Omar Kelly | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
January 22, 2008

MOBILE, Ala. - Dan Henning has emerged as the leading candidate to become the Dolphins' offensive coordinator, according to two sources. .......... Henning, who has had head-coaching stints with the Falcons (1983-86) and Chargers (1989-91), is in South Florida to talk with the Dolphins and is believed to be the favorite to improve the team's 28th-ranked offense.
......... Giants quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer, who served as a mentor to new Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, is also considered a candidate. Henning and Palmer have worked for Bill Parcells, the team's vice president of football operations........ Henning worked under Parcells from 1998-2000, when Parcells was coach and eventually head of football operations for the Jets. He also worked under Don Shula on the Dolphins from 1979-80. .............Sparano worked under Palmer at the University of New Haven and got his first NFL job when Palmer, 58, was the Cleveland Browns coach in 1999 and 2000. Palmer also was the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach in 2006 when Sparano called the plays in Parcells' last season in Dallas.
.......... While this is the lone week teams can talk with assistants from the two teams playing in the Super Bowl, Palmer had not been contacted by the Dolphins, according to his agent......... Henning, 65, has extensive experience running NFL offenses. He ran the Bills' offense from 1997-98 and the Redskins for four years collectively (1981-82, 1987-88), and was part of two Super Bowl championships with then coach Joe Gibbs in Washington ........... He was most recently the Panthers' offensive coordinator from 2002-06, but got fired after a disappointing 8-8 season. If he is hired, Henning would be reunited with recently named offensive line coach Mike Maser, who worked for the Panthers from 2003-06.......... The Panthers scored 391 points in 2005 when Henning helped receiver Steve Smith, quarterback Jake Delhomme and guard Mike Wahle earn Pro Bowl berths......... The Dolphins could also be close to adding assistants — and possibly a coordinator — on the defensive side........... Cowboys assistants Paul Pasqualoni, Todd Bowles and Kacy Rodgers are expected to be up for vital roles on Sparano's staff, and today the Dolphins can begin negotiating with them because their contracts expired. Pasqualoni, who coached Syracuse for 14 seasons, is believed to be the front-runner to serve as defensive coordinator, and sources say he's been exploring private schools in the area for his three children........... Bowles will likely continue coaching the secondary, but might be appointed assistant head coach, and Rodgers will likely continue to work with the defensive line.......... All three were brought to Dallas by Parcells and have worked closely with Sparano.

Staff Writers Ethan Skolnick and Harvey Fialkov contributed to this report.

I am not sure I would want to be the guy responsible for passing up on a potentially great running back in the draft. I don'treally have access to all the info on McFadden but what if he ends up being the next Barry Sanders or someone like that.

I like Ronnie Brown but the people that are saying he is fragile and injury prone have a good point. We DO have a whole lot of needs. Im just glad Im not in charge of the decisions

Good to see u FF and Riv. I have been starved of some decent footy talk. All I hope is the the Fins get a chance to trade down. I actually think there is great value to be had near the end of the first round. I love the RB McFadden but on reflection with RW,RB if the knee holds up, Chatman, Booker, Gado and Cobbs we have a decent corps of running backs. I just hope we do not get sucked into the Dorsey and Jake Long camps. They should be left alone IMO.

I wood take by position, trade down the #1 and the first 3 picks shood be OL,WR and then CB. I am sure there wood be an extra pick or 2 so they wood be DL and another CB. ( I wood luv to snaffle Limas Sweed as the WR).

I like our safeties, Allen is coming on and Bell will be back. I am sure Parcells and co. will target some DBs and DTs in F/A.

Good to see you too Oz man..

I am ready for some good football news!
I hope we can trade down too, but there has to be other teams with a desire to move up. Moving downis easy some years hard others.

No Vicks Or LT or Manning this year. Just our luck!

I have not seen much of mcfadden.

Riv...from what I have read and seen on one tape highlights the comparisions to Adrian Peterson are valid. However, there has been a nightclub incident which makes people leery but really the talent level is there. Dorsey will not fit the 3-4 D we plan to use. Jake Long is more a RT than LT.Still any upgrade on Shelton wood be welcome. Maybe we make a play for a LT in F/A and take Long anyway. I still think we do a deal with the Cowboys or possibly the Falcons if they really feel one of the QBs is their guy.

I personally think we pass on a QB.

All Phin fans are now smiling and are truly looking forward to the future. It will be rosy. The worse coach in our history has moved on and so can us fans thanks to the Giants.

I say QB, start there, we need an identity. We need another leader
type who will make the team better with him around.

Going RB is always more of a risk than QB.

As for the D, oh boy, well a better pash rush makes the secondary
look better, so I guess maybe another "Jason Taylor" is what the
tuna orders.
